Most Expensive Domain Sale of the Week

Posted on October 27, 2007 by midascode

What were the most expensive domain names sold in the past week? What were the big money sellers? and does the mighty .com have some new challengers to the throne?

Well, I can reveal that this weeks most expensive domain sale was for the domain name: OTV.com for the tune of a whopping $110,000

Not bad!

Is .com Still King?

Many people will tell you to avoid anything other than a .com extension, but it may appear that this advice is getting a little dated. Let’s look at the other 4 domains in the top 5 top sellers for the past week:

OTV.com $110,000
Insurance.mobi $42,005
Hotel.pk $35,644
Hawaii.de $31,367
Pussy.mobi $24,158

Amazingly only one of the top 5 domains was a .com, so it may appear that the tides are turning.

Wishful thinking alert: Pussy.com is perhaps from someone who loves cats….

Elsewhere in the domain markets it was of personal interest to me to hear that Spain had the most country based sales in the top 20 biggest country based sales last week. The pick of which was JuegosJuegos.es (Juegos means Games), and this sold for $6,416

Perhaps finally Spain is catching up on the net.

How To Find a Needle in a Virtual Haystack

Posted on August 22, 2007 by midascode

Trying to find a good domain name is the virtual equivalent of finding a needle in a haystack. Long gone are the golden days where you didn’t have to have 50 attempts before finding the domain you want.

But it IS still possible to find some great domain names, and the process can be made easier by using some domain finding tools.

I have compiled some of the very best domain research tools below.

Good luck finding your needle.

Dislexicon
Dislexicon

Dislexicon takes small words and adds suffixes and prefixes. Also, it gives you the meaning of the words, and with some practice can be a very powerful tool.

Word Mixer

You simply enter up to 5 words which are then mixed into new words. Simple, but effective.

Wordfinder

This is a tool for crossword puzzles, but if you are smart, you will be able to use it for finding domains.

30 Wasted Domain Names

Posted on August 14, 2007 by midascode

I was recently reading Succeed with this.com, and I stumbled across a list of 30 of the most wasted domain names on the net.

They are all highly valuable and have huge potential, yet very little has been done with them.

Here is the entire list:

1) Cool.com
PageRank: Unranked
Alexa: Over 350,000
This domain is simply parked.

2) Hot.com
A single page with nothing on it except a lame colored logo. The sky is the limit for a domain like this.

3) Porn.com
PageRank: Unranked
Alexa: Unranked
This one is parked too but has a cool design. I’m guessing it’s making decent money, but no where near what a domain of this weight can bring in. Any regular developed porn site attached to this domain could make the profits hit the roof.

4) Sexy.com
After being presented with a warning page of enter or exit, the only thing you see next is a parked page.

5) Alien.com / 6) Ufo.com
These two can be put in the same category. With all the talk about aliens and ufo’s, these domains can be instant success.
Instead, Alien.com is a 404 page!!
And Ufo.com just a parked page.

7) Toy.com
PageRank: 0
Alexa: Over 3 million
An amazing 3 letter domain! Yet just another parked page.

8 ) Pal.com
Some sort of weird and unpopular search engine. Another great 3 letter domain put to waste.

9) Queen.com
Parked

10) Oral.com
Parked

11) Crazy.com
Parked. Could easily be used to feature all sorts of crazy videos or stories.

12) Pro.com
Wow! What can I say. A 403 forbidden! Some people would do anything just to have the word pro in front of another word in their domains, like proplayer or propoker…This person has the 3 letter by itself, and doing nothing!

13) Cash.com
PageRank: Unranked
Alexa: Over 2 million
Just parked.

14) Card.com
Parked for some credit cards. Could be used for a gambling site or a developed credit card site.

15) Super.com
Parked

16) Store.com
This thing could be something similar to eBay or Amazon, but it is just parked.

17) Cloth.com / 18) Clothing.com
Each of them could be the central location for anything related to clothing, but just parked.

19) Personal.com
A great domain for a dating site or personal resource information site, but parked.

20) Join.com
Parked

21) Fight.com
PageRank:1
Alexa: Over 1 million
Anything about boxing and UFC and mixed martial arts can be discussed here and it would easily be the #1 reference on the subject.

22) Gamble.com
PageRank: 3
Alexa: Over 8 million
Parked

23) Home.com / 24) House.com
One of them parked, the other one slightly developed. In the mortgage world, these domains can make more profit than anything else.

25) Dance.com
Parked.

26) Pay.com
Parked

27) Host.com
Parked. Can you find a better domain name for a hosting company?

28) Men.com
PageRank:3
Alexa: Over 250,000
Acquired for 1.3 million dollar and seems fully developed. However, a domain like this carries so much power that it is ridiculous it is not more popular.

29) Plan.com
PageRank:0
Alexa: Over 5 million
Parked

30) My.com
A 2 letter domain! Seems like an unsuccessful hosting company. This is the only 2 letter domain in this list, and man this is wasted.

The Secret World of Domain Tasting

Posted on August 14, 2007 by midascode

Today I invite you into the secret world of domain tasting…

What is domain tasting?

Domain tasting (also known as domain kiting) is the process of abusing the 5 day free trial period when registering a domain name. The domain tasters simply register thousands of domains per day, then monitor them for 5 days, and purchase the ones that get traffic.

People are generally split on the morale issues behind this technique. Some say it is fair, and is a clever technique… others say it is cheating, and immoral.

However, recently thinks have gotten a lot darker.

Let’s look at this example:

* A perfect domain name pops into your mind.
* A quick check at your favorite domain registrar reveals that the domain is still available.
* For some reason, you put off the actual registration for a few days.
* And when you come back to finally register the domain, it’s taken by someone else!

Most people presume this is coincidence, but it now appears that it is part of the domain taster’s artillery.

It is thought that the domain tasters are monitoring the searches you do at places like Godaddy.com (Godaddy deny this). Then, they simply register all the domains that are searched but not purchased.

In other words, they let you do the research, and then they take the domain from under your nose.

Recently DNforum reported these chocking stats:

August 12, 2007 was the largest Domain Tasting day ever Domain Tools reported. They recorded over 8 Million Transactions today. This is a new high. We have never seen 8 Million transactions on one day before. That would be either an add or delete. Over 99 percent of these transactions are completely free and use the 5 day grace period to test domain names for traffic before they are purchase for a long term buy. Sometimes organizations will taste a domain name for multiple 5 day windows. They can tie up a domain for a long time and test it longer. Domain Tasting seems to be getting worse, the number of transactions continues to grow. I can see a day when more domain names exist in the 5 day grace period then exist as real registrations.

and Bob Parsons from Godaddy has this to say on this issue:

“Just over 35 million names were registered for the month of May. Of those just over 2.7 million were permanent registrations. That means that 92.3% of all domain names registered were part of a scam now known as domain kiting. These names were kept off of the market, they were used to generate search engine revenue – AND BECAUSE OF A LOOPHOLE ICANN REFUSES TO ELIMINATE – those 32.3 million names were used without being paid for.”.

It certainly appears that the secret world of domain tasting is no longer much of a secret.

What are your thoughts on this?
